Dry Needling

Overview

Acupuncture and dry needling use thin, sterile needles to reduce pain, relieve muscle tension, and support your body’s natural healing. At Peak Performance Chiropractic Center, we use advanced dry needling protocols to precisely target pain patterns for effective results.

What’s the Difference?

Acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and works by balancing energy flow (qi) along meridians to restore harmony. In contrast, dry needling is a modern technique that targets muscle trigger points, relieving tension, boosting circulation, and stimulating tissue repair.

How It Helps:

These techniques support recovery from chronic pain, muscle tightness, tension headaches, and post-surgical rehabilitation. They help stimulate endorphin release, reduce stiffness to restore range of motion, and enhance circulation to speed up healing.

Is It Right for You?

If you’re experiencing persistent pain or limited function that hasn’t responded to other treatments, acupuncture or dry needling might be the solution. Our healthcare professionals will assess your condition and recommend the best approach.

Our Treatment Approach

Our certified practitioners go beyond basic needling by applying advanced protocols that address multiple layers of dysfunction. We combine traditional acupuncture, advanced dry needling (including methods like intramuscular stimulation and neurofunctional techniques), and electroacupuncture to enhance the therapeutic effect.

Techniques We Use

We start with a relief phase focused on quickly reducing pain and restoring movement. Next, our corrective phase targets deeper muscle imbalances to create lasting improvement. Finally, our wellness phase provides ongoing care to maintain progress, prevent relapse, and optimize performance.

Integrated Care

We complement dry needling with chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapy, and functional rehabilitation exercises to offer a whole-body solution for better mobility, recovery, and long-term results.

What to Expect

Your initial visit includes a thorough assessment and a personalized care plan. Subsequent sessions are tailored to your progress and goals, with ongoing support and guidance provided throughout your healing journey.

Your Questions, Answered

  • Dry needling is a technique where a thin, solid needle is inserted into a trigger point — a tight, irritable knot in muscle tissue — to release tension and reduce pain. The needle stimulates the muscle to relax and increases blood flow to the area, promoting healing. At Peak Performance, we often combine dry needling with electrical stimulation to enhance the response and drive deeper tissue recovery.

  • Electrical stimulation (e-stim) can be attached to the needles after they are placed, sending a low-level current through the muscle tissue. This amplifies the therapeutic effect — improving circulation, reducing muscle guarding, and accelerating recovery. Most patients find the sensation mild and rhythmic, similar to a gentle pulsing. It is well tolerated and can be adjusted to your comfort level.

  • Dry needling is particularly effective for chronic muscle tension, trigger points, neck and back pain, headaches, shoulder pain, hip tightness, and plantar fasciitis. It works well as a complement to chiropractic adjustments because it addresses the muscle component that often keeps joints restricted.

  • Many patients notice meaningful improvement after just one or two sessions. A typical course is two to four sessions, though this varies depending on how chronic the problem is. Dry needling is often done within the same visit as an adjustment or other treatment, so it does not require a separate appointment.
