What Is FAA BasicMed?

FAA BasicMed allows eligible private pilots to fly without holding a traditional FAA medical certificate. Introduced in 2017, BasicMed simplifies the medical certification process for pilots operating under specific flight limitations while maintaining safety standards.

Instead of visiting an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME), pilots can receive their medical examination from any state-licensed physician, including chiropractors certified to perform BasicMed exams.

Who Is Eligible for FAA BasicMed?

To qualify for BasicMed, you must:

  • Hold a valid U.S. driver's license

  • Have held a valid FAA medical certificate at some point after July 14, 2006 (or a special issuance)

  • Not have had your most recent medical certificate denied, suspended, or revoked

  • Complete an online medical education course every 24 months

  • Undergo a BasicMed physical examination every 48 months

Flight limitations under BasicMed:

  • Maximum 6 occupants (including pilot)

  • Aircraft maximum weight: 6,000 lbs

  • Maximum altitude: 18,000 feet MSL

  • Maximum speed: 250 knots

  • Flights within the United States only (with some exceptions for Bahamas and Mexico)
